Lilac Oil Fun Facts
There are approximately 25 different species of lilac plants, each with its own unique characteristics and fragrance profiles.
Renowned for its unique, floral aroma, this essential oil is often used in high-end, luxury perfumes.
Blooming in the spring, lilacs are often seen as a symbol of growth and renewal.
What is Lilac Oil?
Lilacs, with their stunning and sweet-scented purple blooms, flourish in temperate regions, particularly Eastern Europe, where they are widely cultivated.
These flowers are popular as ornamental plants in North America for their aesthetic and symbolic significance. Their vibrant color and captivating fragrance make them a favorite for floral arrangements and garden landscapes.
Historically, parts of the lilac plant were used in traditional practices, including in Chinese herbal traditions.
Lilac Oil is extracted from the flowers using solvent extraction, capturing the essence of their distinctive floral aroma. Today, it is a valued ingredient in fragrance and personal care formulations.

Purchased for hot process soaping
I have several lilac bushes around my home and have been looking for a quality, natural version to use in my hot process soaps. Right out of the bottle, it smelled a bit “chemically” to me, but that settled down after I put it on a test strip and gave it some time and air. My nose is a bit "broken" from a bout with COVID and all the essential oils I've exposed it to over the years, so I asked several others for their opinion. Hands down, it was a winner!
After receiving comments like “I want some,” “very pleasant,” “beautiful,” and “reminds me of jasmine” from folks I trust to tell me, “Don’t use that stuff again,” I’d say this scent is definitely worthy of using in future batches of my soaps!
I used a 2% total oils usage rate in my small hot process batch. My temps reached into the 180s without incident. It took about 4-5 minutes to come to trace, but longer than I expected to cook. I didn’t necessarily see it go through all the usual stages, but it was a very small batch, making four 1-inch bars in my standard-size crock pot, so that may have affected the timing.
I plan on using the lilac oil in my next full batch. I highly recommend it!
