View full detailsThere is an essential oil for virtually every skin concern, so it’s important that you take the time to review your needs and wants in an essential oil. For example, oregano oil can help promote skin that feels moisturized, while ylang-ylang essential oil may revitalize your skin’s appearance, and frankincense essential oil can offer a soothing sensation.
You should always patch test any chosen essential oils (with a carrier oil) before use. If you notice any irritation or discomfort, discontinue use immediately.
We answer the most frequently asked questions about essential oils for skin below to help clear up any concerns.
You should not apply essential oils directly to your skin. Instead, always mix your essential oils with a carrier oil, like almond or jojoba oil, before applying to your skin. You can also select Wholesale Botanics’ ready-to-use blends, as they’re generally safe to apply straight from the bottle (after performing a patch test).
The safest way to use essential oils on your skin is to mix your chosen skin-friendly oils with a carrier oil or something like a lotion. This allows the essential oil to be diluted while still letting you benefit from the aromatic and cosmetic effects of the oil as part of your routine. Also, always patch test any oils (after mixing with a carrier oil) before use to check for any adverse reactions.
Essential oils can irritate sensitive skin, especially more potent essential oils such as peppermint oil and tea tree oil. However, those with sensitive skin can generally lower the amount of essential oils they use in their carrier oil blends or use gentle oils to avoid irritation.
Essential oils are unlikely to clog your pores. However, be mindful to make sure any other skincare products, especially heavy lotions, that you blend your oils with are non-comedogenic as well. It’s also a good idea to patch test any oils first to see how your skin reacts to them.
The best way to apply essential oils to your skin is to dilute your chosen oil with a carrier oil or with something like a lotion or cream. We recommend mixing a few drops into your chosen carrier oil or product, and then gently massaging it into skin just after a bath or a shower.
You can mix essential oils into your skincare routine, as long as the products you are mixing oils into can support this. For example, if you have a regular unscented body lotion and wish to add lavender oil to it, you can add several drops to the bottle and then use it as necessary. However, a heavily scented lotion may be too fragrant if you add additional essential oils.
